A fight between two girls has lead to the deaths of at least 21 people, who were crushed as they tried to flee a Chicago nightclub.

There were more than 1,500 people in the two storey Epitome Night Club when someone released pepper spray or Mace into the air.

The 30-year-old from Gary, Indiana said people started tripping halfway down the stairwell, falling on those ahead of them.

He said he was trapped in the stairwell for about half an hour, lying on top of the bodies, until firefighters rescued him.
